Little Old Paint Horse
03:43
|
|||
I ride a little old paint horse she carries me on my way
She sure a foot in sturdy wild is the rain
All the cattle they are lowing as I’m singing them to sleep
And the stars are like a blanket god hung over me
My love is like an oak tree she’s strong and tall
And she holds me in her branches when I can’t stand at all
And I love her like a Prairie field like I can’t see the end
And I’d walk on forever I’d walk until I’m dead
Those mountain dogs they are calling me from on high
They’re looking for a kill and there’s violence on the rise
They lo me to sleep like my mama sitting by my bed when I was maybe 5 years old
Storms in my head
I ride a little old paint horse she carries me on my way
She sure a foot in sturdy wild is the rain
All the cattle they are lowing as I’m singing them to sleep
And the stars are like a blanket god hung over me

John Came Home
03:11
|
|||
John came home from war this morning he found his wife she wasn't there
And a cold cold feeling crept through his bones when he found a note at the bottom of the stairs
Said I'm in love with your brother I've found a preacher I'm in love and I'm heading to the south
Boy you were fine but I've changed my mind I'm boarding the next train out of town
John flew into a rage like thunder he brought his fist down and he cracked the floor
He thought he broke bone the way he screamed and he roared and he headed right back out
The door said I'm going to find my brother God damn this preached I'm going to put him
underneath a stone
So when the oak trees are so tall the mountains feels small they'll remember the wrath of my
storm
John crashed in with his pistal crying in the morning just before the dawn
He took out his knife and he carved out the light of a future in the eyes of the lord
Strung him on high silhouetted in the sky let the ravens pick him to the bone
When the law man came by he turned down his eyes not to gaze upon the brother of John
The station platform was empty and quiet as she waited for a man who'd never show
When the noon day sun was high and cracking the ground she felt a lump rise in her throat
John swept from behind put a gun on her side said baby you were why I came home
I won't take your life but I want to look into your eyes when you see I killed the man that you love

Arlo
04:10
|
|||
1, 2, 3, 4
Arlo knows the freeways like he knew his family’s farm
All the paths and routes it’ll take you from where you are to where you’re going
And he could drive 10,000 miles and never have to turn around
Black beauties in the glove box for when he was feeling down
He carries around his wife in a Tupperware on the seat
And he’d swear he could see her ghost flicker when he flips on the high beams
When the driving gets too quiet he’d sing her the songs that used to make her dance
A little blaze in the morning to chase away the night times trance
So is this all you have for me
So tell you it’s not what I pictured when I was 17
And I keep on trying but I just can’t believe
This is all you have for me
He used to own some cornfields up in old Illinois
Development screw-like cancerous tumours and the government bled him dry
He held on just long enough to watch his son grow up
The bank called they took it all left him with nothing but his luck
So he pulls up to the neon glow of an old six motel
He stayed here about 100 nights but he never sleeps well
As the static on the TV lows him off to sleep
Swears he could hear her voice whisper between the chatter in his dreams
Is this all you have for me
I tell you it’s not what I pictured when I was 17
And I keep on trying but I just can’t believe
This is all you have for me
I keep on trying but I just can’t believe
This is all you have for me

Maggie

Oh Maggie Maggie Maggie she’s the prettiest girl in town
All the boys try to court her but she always turns them down
She swoops like a swallow and she’s dancing in the barn
With her head up in the rafters and her feet pounding on the boards
Oh Maggie she’s a wildflower everybody knows
You can’t pick her you can’t plant her you can’t tell her where to grow
Oh Maggie Maggie Maggie slips out late at night
Goes waltzing by the river with the stars in her eyes
You’d chance her for a phantom if you saw her on the banks
Oh Maggie mine in a white lace dress where the wild river sings
Oh Maggie she’s a wildflower everybody knows
You can’t pick her you can’t plant her you can’t tell her where to grow
Oh Maggie Maggie Maggie sitting in the tallest tree
Smoking on a cigarette yeah she has no time for me
She’s further than the forest when I’m standing in the field
And all the prairie ghosts are crying because they know just how I feel
Oh Maggie she’s a wildflower everybody knows
You can’t pick her you can’t plant her you can’t tell her where to grow
Oh Maggie she’s a wildflower everybody knows
You can’t pick her you can’t plant her you can’t tell her where to grow
Oh Maggie Maggie Maggie she’s the prettiest girl in town
All the boys try to court her but she always turns them down
She swoops like a swallow when she’s dancing in the barn
With her head up in the rafters in her feet pounding on the boards

Back To You
03:17
|
|||
Well I gambled my last dollar on a girl in a sequin dress
I was just outside of Philly trying to thumb my way back west
In a dirty bathroom mirror, I tried to cut myself off
I was always all or nothing and my courage keeps getting lost
All the words you said to me came back on the drive
Couldn’t bear to bring myself inside because I’m barely alive
Oh darling mine oh I’m going to make it back to you I’m going to make it back to you
Oh darling mine oh I’m going to make it back to you I’m going to make it back to you
I keep waking up with cold sweats they’ve been tearin’ me at my seams
I wish missing you was easier than you’ve been missing me
All the anger in my bloodline had me going for my knife
I felt guilty I felt crazy I cried the rest of the night
Every time I turn around I see the look in your eyes
Couldn’t bear to bring myself inside because I’m barely alive
Oh darling mine oh I’m going to make it back to you I’m going to make it back to you
Oh darling mine oh I’m going to make it back to you I’m going to make it back to you oh
You could call me in the morning just to see if I’m all right
You could tell me that you love me even if I know it’s a lie
I’ll keep driving in the direction at home used to be
But it’s just a worn out picture dancing like a faded magazine
And every time I look inside feel like I’m losing my mind
Couldn’t bear to bring myself inside because I’m barely alive
Oh darling mine oh I’m going to make it back to you I’m going to make it back to you
Oh darling mine oh I’m going to make it back to you I’m going to make it back to you oh

Blackjack County Chain
02:43
|
|||
I was sittin' beside the road in Blackjack County
Not knowing that the sheriff paid a bounty
For men like me who didn't have a penny to our name
So he locked my leg to thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
All we had to eat was bread and water
Each day we had to build that road a mile and a quarter
Black snake whip would cut our backs when some poor fool complained
But we couldn't fight back wearin' 35 pounds of Blackjack County chain
And then one night while the sheriff he lay sleepin'
We all gathered round him slowly creepin'
And heaven help me to forget that night in the cold cold rain
When we beat him death with thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
Now the whip marks have all healed and I am thankful
That there's nothing but a scar round my ankle
Most of all I'm glad no man will ever be a slave again
To that black snake whip and thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
Most of all I'm glad no man will ever be a slave again
To that black snake whip and thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain

Jeremiah
02:27
|
|||
Jeremiah Colter was the biggest man in town
He’d swing that hammer overhead and bring that mountain down
First light to the darkness hounding for gold
Sleep beside the fire with just a rifle in his mule
Well seven years of toiling with nothing to show but sand
Can you come up from the ground with a nugget in his hand
The way he whooped and hollered the birds flew from the trees
And he was loaded up in three days time his true love bound to see
Hadn’t made it a dozen miles when hoof beats met his ears and
He urged his mule faster as the bandits drew near
He came upon a valley where a lonesome cabin stood
If he could hold them there till morning,
He could hold them there for good
They broke through the brambles, five fires flickered red
Two shots broke the darkness and the first of them fell dead
They rushed the door and took it down caught the first one with his knife
And he pinned him to the door frame, the sunset in his eyes
He was wilder than a rattlesnake and cold as the snow
He hung them up and bled them out and left him for the crows
Jeremiah Colter was the biggest man in town
He’d swing that hammer overhead and bring that mountain down
First light to the darkness hounding for gold
Sleep beside the fire with just his rifle and his mule

Greyhound
04:15
|
|||
The girl at the bar she thinks I'm handsome
And I can't tell if she's lonely or maybe she thinks I'm the one
It doesn't really matter I'll be gone in the morning
But I wouldn't mind laying here with her in my arms
Cause I've been feeling like a greyhound
You load me up then you ship me out
I've been running from salvation
I never go fast but I can't seem to slow down
She slides on over asks how I'm doing
I tell her I'm tired right now that feels like a lie
And I can't help thinking about all that I'm losing
Lately, it feels like it's a lot more than just my time
Cause I've been feeling like a greyhound
You load me up then you ship me out
I've been running from salvation
I never go fast but I can't seem to slow down
I never go fast but I can't seem to slow down
Maybe I'm just like my grandfather
He built houses he couldn't build a home
She says I'm just overthinking
But I'm tired of waiting in the driveway trying to turn off a storm
Cause I've been feeling like a greyhound
You load me up then you ship me out
I've been running from salvation
I never go fast but I can't seem to slow down
Yeah I never go fast but I can't seem to slow down

Charlie Boy
02:46
|
|||
And I found her there beneath that willow tree, and I said
"Oh, my darling won't you come with me?"
She said “No, Charlie Boy, I can’t go with you,
I'm pledged to another by my mother
Though our love ain’t true."
Said; "Well, what if I took your hand
And I lead you across the sea?
Then would forget 'bout him?
Would you marry me?" She said;
"No, Charlie Boy, that just cannot be
If we flee the ocean blue, you'd shame my family."
Said; "What if I took a knife
And I put it in his chest?
Then would you believe me, darling
That I love you best?"
They said; "No, Charlie Boy
That just wouldn't do
If you put a knife in his chest
Well, I'll be after you."
So I see her standing up there
In a white-laced dress
And the priest cry's out;
"Does anyone protest?" They said;
"No, Charlie Boy, sit back in your pew
She's marrying another man
There's nothing you can do."
And I guess I couldn't take it, and I just saw red
And I pulled my pistol off my hip, and I shot him in the head
And they said;
"No, Charlie Boy, what the hell'd you do?
You killed him on his wedding night
The hangman'll have you soon."
So I'm rotting here, in this city cell
'Bout tomorrow morning, I'll be resting in hell, they said;
"Oh, Charlie Boy, look how far you fell
She never even loved you, now she never will."

Rosie
05:46
|
|||
Out in the western fields behind nowhere, there’s a girl with a flower for a name
When the night time comes creeping the darkness will have her
And she’ll take all of the blame
She could take the train out of town in the morning
But I bet she’d be back by the spring
Rosie Rosie Rosie
It’s going to be alright
Rosie Rosie Rosie
Won’t you come inside
I met her on a Sunday in the churchyard parking lot
She’s making noise at all the people inside
She says where was your God and my momma was gone and my father couldn’t look me in the
eyes
She said who do you turn to when the war is coming
There’s no one left but you to fight
Rosie Rosie Rosie
It’s going to be alright
Rosie Rosie Rosie
Won’t you come inside
I drive 100 miles just to find her curled up in a puddle of blood
Because someone got angry and they busted her body and left her to die in the mud
She couldn’t see me she was shaking and crying
As I carried her back to my truck
Rosie Rosie Rosie
It’s going to be alright
Rosie Rosie Rosie
Won’t you come inside
This is no way to live
No way to die
No way to live
No way to die
No way to live
No way to die
No way to live
No way to die
So out in the western fields behind nowhere
There’s a girl with a flower for a name

Eloise
02:37
|

Oh Eloise why are you so mean I thought you loved me true
But you lie steal and cheat and you take from me all the things that I Would’ve given to you
The things that I would’ve given to you
You know I’m much better off when you’re gone
Won’t be waiting around by the door
I’ve got that highway fever and it’s burning up in me
I’ll be long long gone by the morning be long long gone by the morn
Oh Eloise why did you leave
Why did you go away when you said I do with your family in the pews
Did you know that you wouldn’t stay
Did you know that you wouldn’t stay
You know I’m much better off when you’re gone
Won’t be waiting around by the door
I’ve got that highway fever and it’s burning up in me
I’ll be long long gone by the morning be long long gone by the morn
Oh Eloise do you think of me
Do I ever cross your mind
Do you think of coming home do you think of me alone well you know I’m thinking of you all the
time
Yeah you know I’m thinking of you all the time
You know I’m much better off when you’re gone
Won’t be waiting around by the door
I’ve got that highway fever and it’s burning up in me
I’ll be long long gone by the morning be long long gone by the morn

Good night sweet Suzanne
Good night my love
Good night oh dear mama
Good night heavens above
Good night coyote
Good night my hound
Good night oh you lazy old moon
Good night train southbound
Good night oh you wicked wind
Good night prairie fire
Good night call miner's daughter so fair
Good night are you thieves and liars
Good night all you midnight girls and
Good night lonesome song
Good night blacktop that I know so well
Good night everything I’ve done wrong
